Animal Attraction (Animal #2) by Jill Shalvis

Animal Attraction (Animal #2)
by Jill Shalvis

Summary:

Jade Bennett couldn't be happier to escape her past for the quiet ranching town of Sunshine, Idaho. Plus, there's nothing like working for veterinarian Dell Connelly. And though Dell has no intention of settling down, Jade's strength and sass are enticements no red-blooded male can resist.

My thoughts:
To simply say I loved this book is an understatement. Jill Shalvis knocks this one out of the park. (for you avid baseball fans- the World Series wrapped up last night). We return to Sunshine, Idaho.  Even the name makes you feel warm and happy. This is the second in the Animal series.

Our hero, Dell is the perfect alpha male, he's strong, dark and brutally handsome. Dell doesn't let many get too close to him, why would he?  He has a long history of those around him abandoning him. As a small child, his mother left him, his father died, and then he gets carted around from one foster family to the next. He has the typical commitment phobia.  It was the attachment that he avoided, that would take trust and blind faith accessing parts of him that he didn’t allow himself to access.

Our heroine, Jade, has inner demons of her own. Eighteen months ago she was attacked and instead of facing her fears, she ran away. She ended up in Sunshine and into Del's life. She is only there temporarily, no need letting anyone get close to her and know her hidden fears.  I couldn't help but chuckle over her compulsive disorder of having a spreadsheet for everything, she sounded a little like me.

Four fearless warriors return to the Highlands to claim their lands and legacies. But all their trials on the battlefield can't prepare them for their greatest challenge yet: winning the hearts of four willful Scottish beauties.

IRRESISTIBLE DESIRE

Alex MacDonald is known for his skill as a warrior, his prowess with women, and his vow to never take a wife. But now his chieftain has asked him to make the ultimate sacrifice: wed Glynis MacNeil, a lass famed throughout the Highlands for her exquisite beauty—and defiant ways.
Familiar with heartbreak, Glynis refuses to fall for another handsome scoundrel. Yet when Alex's past sins force an unlikely union, Glynis gives in to temptation and becomes his wife. Will their newfound passion be strong enough to fight the enemy that threatens their home, their clan, and their very lives?
My thoughts:

If you love sexy highlanders, strong female heroines, a dash of drama and a smidgen or two of some awesome sex scenes, you will not be disappointed. It was hard for me not to put the book down and read it all through the night. For those of you that are interested in history, Ms. Mallory adds a number of nuggets of historical data in the back of the book.

In the first book of the Highlander series, 'The Guardian', we were introduced to the four highlanders who have been friends since childhood: Connor, Ian, Alex and Duncan. After learning of his father's death Connor must take his place as chieftain. In order to solidify his clan, Connor asked his cousin Alex to enter into a marriage alliance with a neighboring clan. Alex would do anything Connor asks of him, but marriage, he had the wrong guy.

“I’d take a blade for Connor,” Alex said, losing his humor, “but I’ll no take a wife for him.”

Kissing Santa Claus NASCAR driver Logan Perrish returns to Lucky Harbor, Washington, with love in his heart and a ring in his pocket. But can Sandy Jansen forget the past and give him a second chance? Or will Logan be spending another Christmas alone?

I'll Be Home for Christmas After ignoring the advice of Miz Miriam Randall, local matchmaker, Annie Roberts expects another hum drum holiday in Last Chance, South Carolina. But when a stray cat arrives in the arms of Army sergeant Matt Jasper, a calico named Holly just may be the best matchmaker of all.

O Little Town of Bramble All Ethan Miller wants for Christmas is to celebrate in Bramble, Texas, with family and friends. But when his childhood neighbor, Samantha Henderson, comes home for the holiday, Ethan realizes that the girl-next-door could be the girl of his dreams.

My thoughts:

Three short stories set around the Christmas theme.

The first book is by Jill Shalvis, ‘Kissing Santa Claus’, it is a subplot from her Lucky Harbor series. Logan is the ex-husband of Tara, Sweetest Thing.  Logan is a race car driver, while in visiting Lucky Harbor  he had a ‘one week holy-shit hot affair’ with the town clerk, Sandy.

He finds one week is just enough to ........

Coffee shop owner Sadie Long has been lusting after her good friend Paul Williams for years. So she's more than a little intrigued when he invites her to a business meeting at Mavericks, the sex club where he works. While catering an event at the club is not quite the proposition she was hoping for, her business could use the boost. And she can't resist the chance to work closely with Paul in such a sexually charged atmosphere. Enter the club's hot owner, Josh, and suddenly Sadie's fantasizing about being part of a threesome.
Paul has always wanted Sadie, but never thought she'd see him as anything more than a friend. On the night of the party, he and Josh tempt Sadie to reveal her deepest desire—a desire both men are eager to help fulfill.

Giving in to her sensual side, Sadie enjoys a night of mind-blowing sex. But in the light of day, will she lose Paul as a friend, or gain him as a lover?
Book 1 of the Long Shots series.

My Thoughts:

This was the first book in a series of three.   I didn't love it, but I didn’t hate it.  The characters were two dimensional and not well developed.  There were many questions left unanswered, certain plot developments were glossed over, which would have given the book more depth.
Sadie came across as very insecure and very naïve; two traits that I don’t particular like in a leading character. Sadie has been in “lust” for her friend’s ex boyfriend, Paul, for 10 years; Paul has had similar feelings, neither one acting on them.  They skirted around the issue for ten years, this was rather hard to believe.  As close as they were, neither one of them....

Love awaits you in Lucky Harbor . . .
Simply Irresistible
After losing her boyfriend and her job, Maddie leaves L.A. to claim her inheritance-a ramshackle inn nestled in the little town of Lucky Harbor, Washington. She sees the potential for a new home and a new career-if she can give the inn the makeover it needs. Enter Jax, a tall, handsome contractor who knows exactly what Maddie needs...

The Sweetest Thing
Helping her sister set up the family inn is just the thing to make Tara forget her ex-husband and focus on her new life. Until she meets a sexy, green-eyed sailor determined to keep her hot, bothered, and in his bed. When her ex reappears, Tara must confront her past and decide what she really wants.
If the sisters are lucky, they might just find that everything their hearts desire is right here in Lucky Harbor.

My thoughts:

Simply Irresistible

I don't think there is a better name that describes this book- it's SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE. From the first chapter, I was hooked. Humor, romance, and plenty of hot sex- three ingredients to make this a WINNER!!!

Tara, Maddie and Chloe, three half sisters who are strangers, but stay together as family. Growing up apart from one another, each with a different father, they reunite after their mom's death. They are brought together to deal with the "inn" they inherited from their mom. Each sister has their own quirks, Chloe, the youngest is "wild child", Maddie, the "mouse" is the middle child- the approval seeker, and Tara the "steel magnolia", the southern, snobby perfectionist. Each struggling with their own demons, and together they create a bond that can't be unbroken. It was a hoot reading the interaction between the sisters.

Love is in the air this Christmas!

Christy was hoping to skip Christmas this year. Her kids have other ideas - they've put their dad's name at number one on their Christmas list. So it looks as if Christy will be hightailing it up to the Lake District to play happy families with her ex!

Snow-capped mountains and roaring log fires - Alessandro's home is like walking into a Christmas card. Is it really safe for her to spend Christmas with her dreamy, funny - no! - entirely infuriating ex-hubby?

Miranda has completely the opposite problem. Being single and pregnant at Christmas was certainly not her wish come true. She doesn't believe in miracles, but then resident hunk Jake sweeps her off her snow-covered shoes. Come Boxing Day dare she dream that Mr Sex-on-Legs might be for more than just Christmas?
My Thoughts:

This is my first book from the Mills & Boon Medical Romance Line. Two short stories, but I preferred Miranda and Jake's story.

The medical terminology is great, very detailed.  The only gripe I would have is that unless you were knowledgeable of medical terms used in the UK, the U.S. reader can be somewhat confused. A reader from the author’s area (UK) won’t find anything strange about the spelling or choice of words, but a person on the other side of the world may not be aware of spelling/word differences between the British vs. American language. Sisters are Nurses, Specialists are Consultants, and the most confusing was how they referred to "Doctors", as they are addressed as "Mr. or Ms.” What’s that about?

My thoughts:

I received this ARC copy free of charge in exchange for an honest review.
I have never read any previous books from Charity, so I wasn't sure what to expect. It has four different stories that intertwine with each otherI was pleasantly surprised at the depth she was able to give her characters in this novella. Ms. Parkerson developed the characters in such a manner that I was able to connect with each of them, in as much that this reviewer wanted the book to go on for another 100 pages.  But,  then I guess it wouldn't be a novella now would it..

This novella has a great blend of love, internal conflicts, family issues and lots of steaming love scenes. She surprised me a few times with how the stories played out. I found myself laughing and grabbing for the Kleenex. At times I thought I had it figured out who would end up with who but things aren't always what they seem. There were definitely some twists and turns that I wasn't expecting (which I LOVE) between the characters and plots. My favorite story was Chocolate, no maybe Wishes, or maybe... it was too hard to pick. I liked them all.

I would recommend this book. Great read, well worth it.

One night to indulge their wildest desires...
Adam Lancaster has been in love with Rob McKeith—and attracted to Rob's wife, Shayla—for years, but he fears their friendship would be over if they knew the truth. So he's thrilled when his secret fantasy becomes reality and the couple offers him a very special gift: a sensual Christmas Eve in their bedroom.

My thoughts:

Despite the length of the story, the author spent time building the characters and throughout the story the reader knew exactly what each character was thinking and feeling. I love the fact, there were separate chapters written for each character, letting them develop more completely within the story.
Another aspect which I liked about this short story, were the depiction of the sex scenes. …I have often found when reading short stories, specifically erotica, some authors tend to speed right into the sex scenes and do little to provide a background of the characters or a plot.   I found it refreshing that N.J. Walters didn’t fall into this group. You get high marks from me on that!!

Val McDougal knows all about heartbreak. First, the love of her life, Sam Turner, left to join the rodeo circuit two years ago. Now she faces a new kind of pain—her beloved father is dying. The last thing she needs is Sam's unexpected return to Pike, Montana, to take over his family's ranch, stirring up desires Val doesn't think she can handle.

Sam knows he made the biggest mistake of his life when he broke things off with Val. He's determined to win her back, this time for good. But despite the sizzling heat between them, Val keeps pulling away. He has to convince her to trust him—and her own heart—again, especially as the time draws near when she'll need him the most...Book two of the Sisters of McDougal Ranch series.Look for book one, Chantilly's Cowboy, available now.

My thoughts:

I normally do not read book out of sequence, but honestly this book could stand on its own. After reading this, I am anxious to go back and read Book One Chantilly’s Cowboy. I fell in love with the family, the book was very inspiring and paints an intimate portrait of a family dealing with their father’s illness. The author was able to bring each character to life. You felt the sister’s bond and how they can endure anything as long as they have each other.

"I named my girls after different types of lace... Margot, Bisette, Florentine, Chantilly and Valenciennes. You all carry the middle name of Lace for a reason. For how dainty and fragile lace appears, because it is all intricately woven together, lace is a hardy, strong fabric that will last a lifetime. Just like you girls."

The heroine is Val, she is the youngest. She is afraid to love because she is afraid of losing that love. She was young when her mom died, and now she faces the death of her father. . Her true love, Sam returns determined to win Val back. Their romance rekindles but Val still struggles with the possibility that she will lose him, too.

Knowing that he was dying, her father scripted letters to each of his daughters. When Val finally is ready to read her special letter, it was heartbreaking, as well as a turning point. With her daddy's final words, she is willing to accept that love is precious and worth the risk.

"loving can cost a lot but not loving always costs more".

Note: Grab Your Kleenex, you’ll need them.

The secondary storylines were also great. We were left with a cliffhanger, hinting at who will take center stage in the next book.

Well Done! I LOVED it, it even left me wanting more. I would buy this. Oh, and did I mention the HOT Cover Art, gotta love them cowboys!! ♥♥♥

Claimed by the Highland Warrior by Michelle Willingham

Claimed by the Highland Warrior
by Michelle Willingham

Bram MacKinloch has spent seven long, torturous years in captivity with only three things to keep him alive—pure brute strength, a thirst for revenge and the memory of his pretty wife's face.
Shock is only one of the emotions coursing through Nairna's body when she sees Bram again. His scars tell of suffering, the hunger in his eyes speak of a burning desire so raw it could consume them both. But a lot has changed since they so innocently wed….

My thoughts:

This is a very dark hearted story; it was painful to read at times. The hero, Bram, was sixteen and newly married when he went to battle. During the battle, his father gave his life for him, only for Bram and his younger brother to be taken into custody. Held for seven years, Bram is able to escape, but he is forced to leave his brother behind.

The story line addresses the effects of PTSD, guilt for leaving his brother behind, and the uncertainty of what faces him once he returns to this clan. My heart broke for Bram with his broken memories which continued to assault him.

Bram has not seen his wife or clan for seven years. The day he was captured was also his wedding day, he never consummated his marriage to Nairna. During the past seven years, his wife Nairna, believing Bram was dead, re-married and had since became a widow. In many Highlander books I have previously read, the wife is the virgin; but since Bram had never taken a woman before, he didn’t know what he should do. Seeing the love rekindle between the two characters was sweet and endearing. The love scenes were passionate and well written.

I had some mixed emotions on Nairna, although she was strong willed, when it came to Bram, she appeared meek and shy. At one point she compared Bram to her deceased husband, and she was afraid of the feelings he’d stirred within her. Get over it Nairna, the man you love has been gone for seven years and you want him, where your deceased husband didn’t pleasure you at the least and left you unsatisfied. The lack of communication between the characters also was frustrating at times.

There were several second characters and cliffhangers, and no I won’t spoil it for you. I just felt like I was left hanging there, and I keep wondering what happened to them.

Confession on How I Fell in Love....

For those of you who don't know me, I am very competitive. Always trying to win or convince people that my way is the right way. Whew, I feel I finally purged that demon. I am sure my therapist would be proud. I hope I don't have to pay extra for that.

It all start when I was invited to a reader's forum, a place where we could share book recommendations and talk about books, new authors, new genres that I wasn't familiar with. One day I went to the site and low and behold, they posted a Reading Book Challenge.

There is NO WAY I would miss this challenge, even though I had a heavy workload. I couldn't guarantee that I would be able to complete the challenge. But a challenge is a challenge.

With this challenge and the others that followed, this was a turning point for me. It opened me up to different authors or genres, I would have ignored.

Let me give you an example, I was a die hard contempary romance reader, ok maybe some thriller/crime stories. One month the challenge was to read a Paranormal book. Oh my, now that was really outside the box for me. Who was I going to read? One of the posters recommended Kresley Cole- Immortals after Dark series. Talk about surprised, I immediately fell in love with the author and her writing. I couldn't put the series down, I read one after another, in what I may say record timing... Now, I am patiently waiting for the next release Lothaire.

The next month the challenge was Historical Romance, oh come on now, do people really read those books. Call me embarrassed.. Again, I fell in LOVE, this time it was with Julia Quinn and the Bridgerton series.

If it wasn't for this wonderful forum, and the challenges, I would have never known these great authors or their work.

If I can offer one word of advice, if you haven't read any Historical Romance, pick up a book, you may fall in love just like I did.

For those wondering, most months I am able to met the challenges, some I got so hooked with finishing up a series ( did I forget to mention I have OCD, if I start a series I have to read them from start to finish or at least I try) I don't have time to finish the other book challenges.

Seduction of a Highland Lass by Maya Banks

Seduction of a Highland Lass
by Maya Banks

A warrior is caught between family loyalty and forbidden love in book two of bestselling author Maya Banks’s sensual new trilogy featuring three indomitable Highlanders.
Fiercely loyal to his elder brother, Alaric McCabe leads his clan in the fight for their birthright. Now he is prepared to wed for duty, as well. But on his way to claim the hand of Rionna McDonald, daughter of a neighboring chieftain, he is ambushed and left for dead. Miraculously, his life is saved by the soft touch of a Highland angel, a courageous beauty who will put to the test his fealty to his clan, his honor, and his deepest desires.
An outcast from her own clan, Keeley McDonald was betrayed by those she loved and trusted. When the wounded warrior falls from his horse, she is drawn to his strong, lean body. The wicked glint in his green eyes ignites a passion that will follow them back to Alaric’s keep, where their forbidden love draws them deeper into the pleasures of the flesh. But as conspiracy and danger circle closer, Alaric must make an impossible choice: Will he betray his blood ties for the woman he loves?

My thoughts:

Where to start. I know many will think I have gone crazy, but I expected more and it didn't deliver. Yes, I know I LOVE Highlander books and the first book in this trilogy was AWESOME.

This is Aleric's story. He is planned to marry Rionna McDonald and on the way to her clan, he was ambushed and left for dead. He finds his way to Keeley, the outcast McDonald. She is a healer and tends him back to health. His brothers find him and take them back to the McCabe clan. Their love for one another is strong, but how will it prevail as he is duty bound to another?

Just a side note: grab some kleenex on this, I found myself shedding a tear or two...

The Hawk (Highland Guard, #2) Monica McCarty

The Hawk
by Monica McCarty

THE LEGEND OF THE HIGHLAND GUARD CONTINUES

Handpicked by Robert the Bruce to help him in his quest to free Scotland from English rule, the elite warriors of the Highland Guard face their darkest days. When Bruce is forced to flee, his bid for freedom rests on the shoulders of one extraordinary warrior.
Erik MacSorley is a brilliant seafarer who has never encountered a wind he could not harness or a woman he could not win—until he drags a wet, half-naked “nursemaid” out of the waters off the Irish coast. Ellie’s ordinary appearance belies the truth: She is in fact Lady Elyne de Burgh, the spirited daughter of the most powerful noble in Ireland.

Worse, this irresistible woman is determined to prove herself immune to Erik’s charms—a challenge he cannot resist.

Her captor may look every inch a rugged warrior, but Ellie vows that it will take more than a wickedly suggestive caress to impress her. Yet Erik will sweep away Ellie’s resistance with a desire that resonates deep within her heart. Still, he is a man driven by loyalty, and she is a woman with secrets that could jeopardize Bruce’s chance to reclaim his throne. As the battle for king and country sounds across the shores, will Ellie’s love be enough to finally tame the legend known as the Hawk?
Surrender to the pleasure of this novel from the Highland Guard series.

My thoughts:

Second book in the Highland Guard, in this one we meet Hawk, aka Erik MacSorley. He is the seafarer. He pulls Ellie out of the water, from the moment they met you knew their romance was going to be rocky.

Great chemistry between the two of them. Not to spoil it but there was love and heartbreak... but rest assure, love prevailed..

This book seemed to lag somewhat in the middle, but I am glad I continued reading, the ending was a page turner.

Although I love the series, I am disappointed that there was not any Scottish brogue. Also, there were so many clan names being thrown in, some were so close it pronunciation it was hard to keep them separate and sometimes, I was mixed up on which characters were good and who was bad. I was confused at some points with all the earls, lords, clan names and different Islands.

The Chief (Highland Guards #1) Monica McCarty

The Chief (Highland Guard, #1)
The Chief by Monica McCarty

An Elite Fighting Force Unlike the World has ever seen .

Scouring the darkest corners of the Highlands and Western Isles, Robert the Bruce handpicks ten warriors to help him in his quest to free Scotland from English rule. They are the best of the best, chosen for their superior skills in each discipline of warfare. And to lead his secret Highland Guard, Bruce chooses the greatest warrior of all.
The ultimate Highland warlord and a swordsman without equal, Tor MacLeod has no intention of being drawn into Scotland’s war against the English. Dedicated to his clan, the fiercely independent chief answers to no one—especially not to his alluring new bride, bartered to him in a bid to secure his command of the deadliest fighting force the world has ever seen. The treacherous chit who made her way to Tor’s bed may have won his hand, but she will never claim his heart.
Although her husband’s reputation is as fierce as his manner, Christina Fraser believes that something softer hides beneath his brutal shell. But the only warmth she feels is in their bed, in glorious moments of white-hot desire that disappear with the dawn. When Christina’s reckless bid to win her husband’s love goes awry and thrusts them into danger on the eve of war, Tor will face his ultimate battle: to save his wife and to open his heart—before it’s too late.
My thoughts:

WOW! I think I am going to love this series. An elite group of men, who have been gathered together to Bruce to victory. Each one is chosen for their unique skill and together they are the greatest warriors of all. The first book is Tor and Christina, at first I wasn't sure if I was going to like it since their relationship was formed of trickery. I glad I continued on...

Pros:
Great storyline/plot.
Characters are developed.
Steamy romance scenes.

Although there were a number of characters to keep track of, it didn't hinder me in understanding and keeping up.

Cons:
Sorely missed, the Scottish brogue was missing from the dialogue.

1225 Christmas Tree Lane by Debbie Macomber

1225 Christmas Tree Lane
 by Debbie Macomber

Summary:
The people of Cedar Cove know how to celebrate Christmas. Like Grace and Olivia and everyone else, Beth Morehouse expects this Christmas to be one of her best. Her small Christmas tree farm is prospering, her daughters and her dogs are happy and well, and her new relationship with local vet Ted Reynolds is showing plenty of romantic promise.

But…someone recently left a basket filled with puppies on her doorstep, puppies she’s determined to place in good homes. That’s complication #1. And #2 is that her daughters Bailey and Sophie have invited their dad, Beth’s long-divorced husband, Kent, to Cedar Cove for Christmas. The girls have visions of a mom-and-dad reunion dancing in their heads.

As always in life-and in Cedar Cove-there are surprises, too. More than one family’s going to have a puppy under the tree. More than one scheme will go awry. And more than one romance will have a happy ending!

My thoughts:

I have been a faithful fan until the end. It was difficult to say goodbye after these characters have twined themselves around your heart.

Debbie Macomber didn't let her fans down. She didn't rush to a quick finish to her beloved series. She not only provided a great story; she also was able to tie all her previous characters into the final book.

This book focuses on Beth,a divorcee who owns the local Christmas tree farm. In the last book found 10 adorable puppies on her front porch.. Now to find loving homes for all of them. Well don't fret, the gang in Cedar Cove comes to the rescue. Well, if that wasn't enough, it is Christmas time in Cedar Cove and Beth's daughters come to spend the holiday. And, they invited their father.. the two girls plan on reuniting their parents.

It was sad to get to the final pages, maybe Debbie Macomber can write some new stories on the children of Cedar Cove, her loyal fans can only hope for a reunion perhaps, maybe a wedding. Another chance to sit and share coffee and pie with some dear friends.
