It's hard to keep a secret in the small town of Pike, Montana, but veterinarian Margot McDougal and sheriff Roy Lee Hanson managed to keep their relationship on the sly for months. Margot cares for Roy Lee, but the last thing she needs is to worry about local gossip while she's busy running her clinic and dealing with the loss of her beloved father.

Roy Lee can't wait to tell the world that he loves Margot. He respected her decision to keep their affair quiet until now. It's time for everyone to know Margot is his gal...especially Ryan Martin, her new assistant. He's formed an attachment to Margot and Roy Lee is sure the city boy's unexplained appearance in Pike means he's up to no good.

Margot just wants to help Ryan fit in, and Roy Lee's jealousy soon drives a wedge between them. A wedge that only increases when Margot is roped into Ryan's secret, too..

My Thoughts:

I was looking forward to another visit into the McDougal's family. There are five close knit sisters that make up this family, each coming back to help and deal with their father's recent death. This time it is Margot and her sheriff man, Roy's story.

I didn't like the underlying storyline, if you are desperately in love and this person is your rock, your support when faced with a devastating life event, why would you keep them a secret. Why not celebrate your love with your family!!

I will let you in on a little known fact, one of my father's last wishes was to see me married before he passed, how could I let the man who provided for me, the man I looked up to ~ down. I was married 10 months before my father passed, he was able to walk me down the aisle and visit me and my husband in our new life together. It was a happy time, a time to rejoice. You live life one day at a time, tomorrow is tomorrow.

I am sorry to say, I just didn't like Margot. And Roy, he was a sweetheart, loving her unconditionally and even putting up with plan of keeping their love a secret.
I give him a lot of credit for that.

I didn't get the character, Ryan. Yes, we learned who he was, but there was little about how his father and his mother met and what happened between them.
I wish this was developed more.

This is the third book in the McDougal series, we have yet to hear from Bisette or Florentine and I plan on reading their stories.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

About the Author

When multi-published Romance author, Debra Kayn is not staying up late dreaming of new stories to write, she enjoys riding motorcycles, gardening, playing tennis, and spending time with a fishing pole in her hands.

She lives in the beautiful Coastal Mountains of Oregon on a hobby farm with her husband and kids. Her love of animals includes dogs, chickens, goats, rabbits, turkeys, geese, and yes...pigs. The peacefulness of a flowing creek across her property provides an excellent spot to read a book on a summer day, go swimming, and catch the ever elusive fish.

One thing she can promise is her books will always have a happily-ever-after, and where love and laughter, and family come from the heart...

Great review Kat. It's always disappointing when the story has potential, but the characters are lacking. I want to know what makes them tick!
