What kind of research did you do for this book?
I did months of research for The Wicked Ways of Alexander Kidd. He’s my first pirate so I researched how they live, what they eat, what they wear, why they wear earrings, etc. Captain Kidd sails the seas, so I researched ship, Brigs, in particular, and the workings of them. How to sail basically. I researched many ports of call for this book, including Portugal, the West Indies, Africa, and Madagascar, (not to mention the Sargasso and Caribbean seas) also what life would have been like in those places in the early eighteen century, Researching Portugal in this era was unforgettable.
What do you think is the greatest creative risk you've taken in this book?
Taking on so much. As I said, I did months of research. I want these characters and their surroundings to feel real. The risk was creating a believable swashbuckling tale of adventure. I think I achieved it, but we shall see.
What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
I can’t really choose a favorite chapter or part of the story I liked writing the best. It was an adventure and I loved every part of it. Perhaps, because of all the Errol Flynn movies I’ve watched, I found a little more enjoyment writing a scene where Alex had to swing on a ratline (rope) from one ship to another to get to Caitrina in time. It played like a movie in my head.
Do you write detailed character profiles before writing or do you find that the characters come to life as you write?
Both. Usually, they just come to life in my head before I start to write. I want and need to get to know them better and I find that doing a detailed character analysis on them helps. It’s just to pick their brains and understand why they would and wouldn’t do or act a certain way. Once I begin writing their story, they always develop more on their own.
Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
It’s mostly all imagination. I do, however, write a lot about honorable men. That comes from real life. I’ve always been drawn to integrity and honor. It was demonstrated to me by my dad, my brothers, and my best friend from my early teen years, my husband.
