Living Vicariously through your Characters

Hi, all! Jennifer here!

One of the great things about being a writer or even a reader is that you get to have things your character has without lifting a finger or spending any money. Pretty cool, huh?  And economical. J

I confess I want something pretty badly now. I must want it, because I’ve given it to each of my characters in the last two books I’ve written. What is it? It’s a …

Dog.

Yeah, I confess I really want a dog. Not just any dog either, but a BIG dog. In the manuscript I’ve just finished I gave my character a German Shepherd (Deuce), and in my recent romance, Sunny Days for Sam, I gave my heroine the sweetest, biggest Golden Retriever that ever lived. Her name is Oats, and I am so in love with her.

Now, you’re probably thinking, “Good grief, woman, go out and get a dog already!”

You’re right! And I would except…I have terrible allergies. Awful, in fact. There are only so many breeds a woman in my condition can own, and the family isn’t too pleased with those choices. So in the meantime, we own four hermit crabs. Yeah. Not the cuddliest of pets, which is probably why I’m so desperate to write a more fun pet into my stories. In my books I can enjoy my dogs all I want without any sneezing.

And bonus, there’s no pooper-scooper duty!

Big thanks to Forever Book Lover for having me today! I hope you all get to meet Oats in my new release Sunny Days for Sam and come to love her as much as I do!

Sunnyva “Sunny” Fletcher is a firm believer in fairy tales. With the recent debt she’s acquired, the hope of something magical happening in her life is the only thing keeping her going. She needs a job fast. So when Sunny learns the sexy new vacationer in town is looking for a nanny, she starts to believe she just may have a fairy godmother after all!

Internet guru Sam Calloway is only in town for the summer and needs a nanny for his two small children. However, the beautiful and inexperienced Sunny is not exactly the kind of caregiver Sam has in mind. It doesn’t take long for Sunny’s tenderhearted and bubble-blowing ways to soon have the children—and Sam—enamored with her. She’s a dream come true. But after what Sam’s been through, he’s stopped believing in fairy tales long ago.

Sunny manages to work her way into Sam’s closed-off heart, but at the end of the summer, will the workaholic dad go back to his life in New York City, or will he decide his days are much sunnier here with Sunny?

Jennifer Shirk has a bachelor degree in pharmacy-which has in NO WAY at all helped her with her writing career. But she likes to point it out, since it shows romantic-at-hearts come in all shapes, sizes, and mind-numbing educations.
She writes sweet romantic comedies and won third place in the RWA 2006 NYC's Kathryn Hayes Love and Laughter Contest with her book, The Role of a Lifetime.

She's also a board member for Straight Ahead Ministries, an organization involved in helping spread the gospel and aiding medical and pharmacy students in Russia. She resides in a beach resort in NJ, and when she's not involved in all the above, she's taking care of her most treasured possessions: her husband, daughter, and four hermit crabs.       Website  Blog

Jennifer will be giving away a print copy of "Sunny Days for Sam" (US/Canada only -- an eBook copy of "Role of a Lifetime" will be substituted as prizes for any international winners) to two randomly drawn commenters.

LOL - that's a good way to get past the problem. I think that pets always add something to a story. In real life they roll on their bones and get smelly or they chase bumble bees around the house at 10 pm when their owner is trying to work. Just saying'
All the best with Sunny Days for Sam.

I love this topic because I'm guilty of it, also! My main character is a champion athlete and a wonderful cook, two things I'd love to be!

Thanks so much for the giveaway. I'm a reader and writer of sweet romance and Sunny Days for Sam sounds like such a sweet story!

Hey Jennifer! I love dogs and have one in my current manuscript. Ditto on allergies. That's why we have labradoodles. My first is a big girl (801bs). The second one is still a puppy but she'll probably hit 50lbs. In fact, she just got spayed and is wearing what my kids call the cone of shame :(

Just remember...dogs are like mischievous kids lol.

I loved my little dog. I lost her after 13 years, and decided against getting another. They don't live very long, and it was really difficult losing her. I would much rather read about dogs.

I guess it depends on how serious your allergy is, but there are some dogs that are supposed to be easier on the ol' schnozz. Poodles, and maybe some poodle mixes, and that dog at the White House... some kind of water dog? Austrian, Australian, something like that. Cute, too. Than again, nobody has to get out of bed to walk a dog who only lives in your books.

Aw, I love dogs. We always had dogs when I was growing up but now that I'm older and have an unpredictable work schedule I can't keep a dog because I feel like it's not fair to have to leave the dog alone so much. But anytime I see a dog I am ready to play!

Ha, Ha...I've never thought about that. I guess you can have everything you've wanted by giving it to the characters. I don't know what kind of dogs are good for people with allergies, but the cats that are allergy-friendly are barely even cats! LOL.

I don't have a pet but I love pets in stories. Often they have a lot of character.

@Rula Sinara
I heard labradoodles would be good for me. Maybe I should write one in one of my next stories to test it out. LOL

Thanks so much for all the great comments. And thanks to Foverbooklover for hosting me!
